In late 2018 the UK government released an app to try to make it easier for EU nationals to register their UK residency after Brexit through their smartphones. The app would check that someone’s identity was genuine, and would verify that the document they uploaded (either an EU biometric passport or a UK residence card with biometric chip) was genuine.
It didn’t, however, take into account that the NFC on iPhones is restricted and therefore the app wouldn’t work on Apple devices – Android devices were unaffected.
Recently, the Government has had a breakthrough and reached an agreement with Apple whereby Apple will unlock the use of the iPhone’s NFC chip for use with the app before the end of this year (2019). This means that those who hold an EU passport, will now be able to register for the EU Settlement Scheme through the ID Document Check app!
